Words from Eminem
“Skylar Grey sent [a demo version] to Rick, and Rick was playing it — not for me, he was just playing it — and I walked in. I was like, “What the fuck is that?”
When he played it for me, I instantly started thinking of lines to it. I was like, “Yo, give me that and I’ll record it in the other room.” So I sat there and wrote it and recorded it pretty quick. Once I laid it, we kinda knew we shouldn’t put drums in it.
I think it was [Rick’s] idea to try to get Skylar Grey to do it, and I was like, “Man, she ain’t doing that shit — there’s no fucking way.” She’s really big, she’s got a lot going on, so I just kind of thought it was a stab in the dark — it was like a fantasy thing if we could get her. Yeah man, she killed it.
“That song was more about self-doubt, insecurities, that kind of shit. I’ve never really seen myself as — how can I say it — the way I’ve seen some fans act towards me.
Even to this day, I’ve been in this game a long time and it’s still weird to me, because I just rap and I certainly haven’t had a perfect career. I’ve put out some not-so-great albums and I realize that.
