It’s really fucking weird [that Royce all of a sudden makes beats]. I told him years ago, because of the way he was picking his beats and his ear for them, I was like “Yo, why don’t you just make beats?” Because you can control what you make, so it’s like making the song “Lose Yourself” and sitting there from the beginning down to the end of the completed song — you can make that trajectory go wherever you want, but he would rather put his time into the pen. I kept telling him, even years later, like, “Yo, man, I’m telling you you’d be good at it,” and he started doing the shit. Then I didn’t hear from him for a couple months, and he started hitting me off with beats, and I was like “Yo! This shit is crazy.” [Then he sent me] the “You gon’ learn” one, and I was like “What the fuck!? Like, bro, how did you get this good this quick?”

“You Gon Learn” was actually a song that I had for my album. I went in from where I was at with the album at that time and I played some of the songs that I had for him and he really messed with that one [laughs]. I can’t exactly remember how it happened, but I remember telling him, “You can have it if you want it? Don’t get it twisted. What’s mine is yours? You’re still my good friend.” I gave it to him and he did his magic to it. He added instruments to it, he added his shit to it, murdered it and that’s how the blessing happened.
