“I was writing my album with this guy Frequency, and we were like, “Let’s get in our friends Jon Bellion and Aalias and let’s just work on music.” So we’re working on tracks, and we’re gonna shop it as an EP to get a record deal.
And one day — I was in a super dark headspace because I was dropped from Island — I was super bummed, and I was looking up quotes, and I saw this quote about how there were monsters inside of us and around us, and that we stop looking for the monsters under our beds when we find that they’re inside of us. And I came to a point where I was like, “I’m tired of people trying to look for acceptance. I thought I was losing control, like I’m going crazy.”
So we went to the studio and we wrote this hook, and I was in the booth recording the vocals, and I was like, “Whoa… this is for Eminem.” Like it hit me — it was so weird. Frequency sent it to Riggs, who works for Shady, and Em heard it, and then it was silent for 10 months.
And then literally Rihanna posted something on Twitter saying like “#Monster.” I was like, “Oh my gosh.”
