Words from Skylar Grey
“The hook actually existed for a few years, and out of nowhere it got taken [by Sony Pictures] to be the end title for Venom 2 — just the hook and track. And then they were like, “We need to put rappers on this.” So during that whole process, looking for rappers, out of nowhere Sony Pictures was like, “We’re not gonna use the song anymore,” and I was like, “Shit, this song’s so good — what are we gonna do with it?” I was like, “Okay, I don’t think I’ve ever sent this one to Marshall, so I’ma see if he likes it.”
So I sent it to him, and there was just weird timing in the universe where I got a response from him and an email from somebody telling me that Sony wants the song back — it was the same day that Marshall was like, “I want it.” I was like, “Oh, fuck!” […] Obviously my loyalty’s to Marshall, so I tried to say no to Sony Pictures, but they had already put the song to picture, and for them to pull the song out of the movie at that point — I don’t know why they just assumed that they could do that, but whatever — they were like, “We’re gonna have to push back the whole release date of the movie to change this song,” […]
So luckily, Marshall, when he did his part, maybe [Paul] convinced him to let Sony Pictures have it, I don’t know.
