“I remember I wanted Em on something because Book Of Ryan is my self-defining album. I wanted that to be the album in my catalog that I’m not supposed to be able to top, so of course I had to have my brother on that one. “Caterpillar” just spoke to me in that way, like, “You should put Marshall on this.”
Just in case he didn’t have time to do it, I also sent the track to Logic. Logic ended up recording his verse before Marshall. I remember when I brought the song to Marshall, he noticed right away that Logic’s verse was already on there. I was like, “Yeah.”
When I played it for him, I just remember him going, “Okay.” Then he ended up killing it. I think he has this thing where he wants to outdo everybody. Logic killed it too, but I think hearing that verse put a battery in Marshall’s back and lit a fire under him.
I still used the Logic version, but it ended up being more of a B version.
